In 1983, the Downriver branch was awarded accreditation as a free-standing institution by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. In 1990, it became totally independent when it was purchased by Votech Educational Systems Inc. At that time, the school was renamed the Detroit Business Institute - Downriver.
Since its establishment, the institute has grown in enrollment and in the number of courses and services it offers. Occupational/career programs are a major endeavor at the institute. A major factor in the growth of the school has been its job-placement results, along with the stability of its administration and faculty.
The institute is licensed by the Michigan State Board of Education as a private vocational school and has been accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools since 1977.
Programs are offered in administrative assistant, medical assistant, medical office, computer office specialist and legal administrative assistant. Programs also are offered evenings. Financial aid is available to those who qualify.

The original Dorsey Business School began in 1934, and was in the Palms Building in downtown Detroit. Currently, there are four campuses in the Detroit area: Southgate, Wayne, Madison Heights and Roseville.
Dorsey offers nine-, 12- and 15-month programs for office support and medical careers. Diplomas are awarded for completion of administrative, computer accounting, word processor, legal and medical careers.

These include the Downriver Campus in Taylor, Downtown Campus on Fort Street in Detroit, the Eastern Campus on Conner at I-94 in Detroit, the Northwest Campus on Greenfield near Joy Road in Detroit and the Western Campus on Haggerty Road in Van Buren Township. Additional services are offered at extension sites in community centers, senior facilities and through partnerships with business and industry.
More than 68 career-technical and liberal arts transfer degree and certificate programs are available, giving students a wide range of career choices and options. A variety of high-technology, automotive, electronic and manufacturing programs are available at the campus along with liberal arts transfer courses. Applications for admissions are taken throughout the year. Financial aid and academic support services are available along with access to the Detroit Area Library Network (DALNET) in the John Dingell Library.
